Importing Personal Effects into Sri Lanka: Documents & Customs Rules
Removal Goods
Documents Required- Original Passport
- Inventory List / Packing List (English only)
- Copy B/L telex release
- Custom Declaration (ask your local agent)
- Authorization Letters (ask your local agent
- Once the custom documents have been accepted by customs, the local agent will proceed with the custom Inspection. When inspection is completed, the shipment will be released and available for delivery.
Diplomatic Removals
Documents Required- Duty Free Clearance certificate from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- Inventory List / Packing List
- AWB/OBL (telex release is acceptable)
- Certified Diplomatic ID Card Copy
- Certified true copy of passport
- Custom declaration (ask your local agent)
- Authorization letter (ask your local agent)
- Once the Embassy/Consulate has provided the duty-free clearance certificate, the local agent will arrange custom clearance.
- Shipment of “A” Facility diplomatic status will NOT undergo physical Custom Inspection.
Wine & Alcohol
Documents Required- No special documents required
- Sri Lankan customs only allowed 2 bottles of Wine & Alcohols. Rest will be considered as a commercial quantity, and DUTY/TAXES will apply.
Wedding Trousseaux
Documents Required- No special requirements
Restricted items

- Brand new furniture
- Clothes & personal belongings (duty free with reasonable quantity)
- Computer software, including floppy discs, music discs, tapes and all video tapes
- Videos, CD’s (will be screened for contents)
- Vehicle or vehicle parts
- Duties on consumer electronics

Alcohol (for diplomats and non-diplomats)
Documents Required- No special documentation
- Only 2 bottles are allowed
Custom Clearance timeframe
Customs Prescriptions- Air Shipment: 1-2 working days (After transferred to the designated CFS, transferring process to the designated CFS will take 8 – 10 working days)
- FCL Shipments: 2-3 working days (After container discharged at Colombo port)
- LCL Shipments: 2-3 working days (After transferred to designated CFS, transferring process to the designated CFS will take 1214 working days)
